Historiscope for the Decade of Centenaries

A commemorative artwork that considers events that took place during 1913-1923, remembering the events, places and people and positioning the viewer at the fulcrum of those, geographically and temporally.

This steel toposcope charts over 200 events that occurred during the War of Independence, the Rising and the Civil War. Being physically and geographically aligned with the centre of the toposcope, the viewer activates the work, and is thus reminded that we are very much still a part of that complex narrative. And while it represents the geographic spread of the events of the decade, it recognizes that those victories, failures, legacies and consequences have brought us to where we are today: our present is the sum of the parts of that past.
